euroSCORE is a tool that was designed for your doctors to work out how risky your heart operation is. EuroSCORE gives an idea of the likely risk if a group of patients (exactly like you) have a similar operation to yours. This information is useful in guiding your doctor whether to advise you to have surgery. The European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE) II of 2012 is a cardiac risk model for predicting mortality after cardiac surgery and is the second version of the original score published in 1995, with the aim to bring the score up to date with current evolution of the cardiac surgery field, i.e. to improve the original score’s prediction in line with the sustained reduction of risk-adjusted mortality of improved cardiac surgery results. The Euroscore was developed base on outcomes in 19,030 patients. It comprises 18 variables, weighted from 1-4, and defines low risk as 0-2 points (0.8% mortality), medium risk as 3-5 points (3.0% mortality), and high risk as > 5 points (11% mortality).
